Free ski training camp to be held in Kupwara from today

Kupwara, Feb 8: A free ski training camp aimed at promoting winter sports and engaging youth will be held at the Tee Pee area of Kupwara district from February 9 to 14, organisers said on Sunday. The six-day camp, organised by 5 PARA (SF), will be open to children above 12 years of age and will focus on basic skiing skills, safety and supervised practice.

The six-day programme will will focus on introducing beginners to skiing while providing structured guidance to those with some prior exposure.

Organisers said the camp will feature safety briefings, basic slope techniques, and supervised practice sessions. Free tea and refreshments will also be provided to all participants.

Officials associated with the programme added that such activities are designed to foster discipline, confidence, and interest in sports among youngsters living in snowbound areas.

“Tee Pee offers natural terrain suitable for training new skiers. By holding this camp free of cost, we want to encourage children from surrounding villages to take advantage of winter conditions and explore skiing as a sport,” an organiser said.

Meanwhile, residents have welcomed the announcement, noting that Kupwara’s snow-clad landscapes remain underutilised for winter sports despite their potential.
