SRINAGAR: A minor fire incident damaged parts of an under construction residential house at Shah Wilayat Colony in the HMT area of Srinagar on Sunday evening, officials said, adding that the situation was swiftly brought under control with no injuries reported.
Fire and Emergency Services officials said they received a call about the incident at 09:42 pm, following which fire tenders were dispatched within a minute. Fire units from Fire Station Mujgund and Fire Station JVC rushed to the spot and initiated firefighting operations.
According to preliminary assessment, the fire broke out after the house owner left a hamam, a traditional fire heater, burning. Officials said that after the heater was extinguished, wet wood was placed inside it for drying, which triggered ignition and led to the fire.
The fire caused partial damage to a few rooms of the under construction house. However, officials said the prompt response by fire personnel prevented the blaze from spreading and averted major damage. Cooling operations were underway to rule out the possibility of re-ignition.
The firefighting operation was carried out in the presence of the in charges of the concerned fire stations and under the supervision of Deputy Director Fire and Emergency Services Dr Mir Aqib Hussain, along with mobilising officer Aijaz Ahmad Shah.
Officials said no injuries or casualties were reported in the incident. Further investigation, if required, will be carried out as per standard procedure, Fire and Emergency Services Srinagar said.
