SRINAGAR: A fire broke out at a Darsgah in the Turkawangam area of Shopian on Sunday evening, causing damage to the attic and rooftop portions of the building, officials said.

Fire officials said a distress call was received by the District Fire Control Room Pulwama at 21:44 hours, following which fire tenders from Zainapora and Lassipora fire stations were rushed to the spot. Despite slippery road conditions caused by recent snowfall, the fire tenders reached the location within 10 minutes.

According to the in charge of Fire Station Zainapora, the fire involved a three-storey pucca Darsgah building. On arrival, firefighters found the wooden attic portion and the rooftop engulfed in flames.

Firefighting operations were launched immediately, and the blaze was brought under control within a short time, officials said, adding that cooling operations were underway to prevent re-ignition.

Preliminary investigation suggests that overheating of electrical wiring may have triggered the fire. However, officials said further investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause.

The firefighting operation was supervised by Assistant Director Fire and Emergency Services Moin ul Islam.

Meanwhile, Alok Kumar, Additional Director General of Police, Fire and Emergency Services, urged the public to avoid the use of substandard electrical wiring and equipment and to strictly adhere to fire safety norms to prevent such incidents.
