Srinagar, Apr 3: Erratic weather conditions across the Kashmir Valley have significantly disrupted outdoor sporting activities, with wet playfields forcing organisers to postpone several locally scheduled events, officials and stakeholders said on Friday.
Following a weather advisory issued by the India Meteorological Department (MeT), persistent rain and overcast conditions have rendered grounds unfit for play, impacting cricket, football, and other outdoor sports across districts.
Several local sports organisers told Greater Kashmir that despite announcing match fixtures in advance, the continuing wet conditions have left them with no option but to defer games.
“We had planned a local cricket tournament this week, but the ground conditions are not suitable. Continuous rainfall has left the outfield soggy, posing injury risks to players,” said an organiser from Srinagar.
Football activities have also been affected, particularly at community-level venues where drainage facilities remain inadequate.
Officials from government-run sports bodies acknowledged that scheduled outdoor fixtures have taken a hit. “Some of our planned activities have been postponed due to the prevailing weather scenario. Player safety remains our top priority,” an official said.
The ongoing weather disturbance has not only interrupted competitive fixtures but also routine training sessions, with young athletes losing crucial practice time.
The MeT department has forecast continued unsettled weather over the coming days.
