Srinagar, June 25: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said on Wednesday that imposition of emergency in 1975 was ‘murder’of democracy.
Expressing his remarks, the Lieutenant Governor Sinha paid tributes to those who fought to revive democracy and struggled to safeguard constitutional values during darkest period of country’s democratic history.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Lieutenant Governor said: “Imposition of emergency on 25th June 1975 was murder of constitution.On #SamvidhanHatyaDiwas, I pay tribute to millions of Satyagrahis who fought to revive democracy & continued their struggle to safeguard constitutional values during darkest period of India’s democratic history.”
Pertinently the emergency in India was a 21-month period from 1975 to 1977 when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency across the country by citing internal and external threats to the country.
