Educational institutions to remain closed today, exams postponed

Srinagar, Aug 27: The government on Wednesday ordered closure of all educational institutions including schools, colleges, and universities across Jammu and Kashmir on August 28, 2025. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure following the incessant rains triggering flash floods and landslides and inundating residential areas at various places across J&K.

“Schools and colleges across J&K will remain closed on Thursday in view of inclement weather,” Education Minister Sakina Itoo wrote on her official ‘X’ handle.

This was followed by the issuance of orders by the concerned officials informing about the closure of the educational institutions.

“In view of the inclement weather conditions and for the safety of students, it is hereby ordered that all the government and private recognised schools in the Kashmir division shall remain closed on Thursday,” read an order issued by Director School Education Kashmir (DSEK).

A similar order was issued by the Director of School Education Jammu (DSEJ) in which the closure of schools was extended till Thursday.

Following incessant rains causing a flood-like situation, the schools remained closed on August 27, 2025, across the Jammu division.

The educational institutions in six districts of the Kashmir division – Srinagar, Budgam, Anantnag, Shopian, Kulgam, and Pulwama – also remained closed on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Director Colleges J&K, also ordered closure of Government Degree Colleges across J&K on Thursday.

“In view of the inclement weather conditions, it is hereby ordered that the universities of J&K shall remain closed on Thursday,” reads an order issued by Additional Chief Secretary HED, Shantmanu.

Besides the closure of the educational institutions, the universities and other exam conducting bodies also announced the postponement of exams scheduled on Thursday.

“All the examinations of the University of Kashmir scheduled for Thursday have been postponed. The fresh dates for these exams will be notified later,” Controller Examinations KU, Majid Zamaan, told Greater Kashmir.

The Cluster University Srinagar (CUS) and Islamia College of Science and Commerce also postponed all its examinations scheduled on Thursday.

Meanwhile, JKSSB also postponed Physical Endurance Test (PET) and Physical Standard Test (PST) scheduled on Thursday for the post of Constable (Armed, SDRF, and IRP), Home Department.

“The fresh dates for the PST and PET exam for Police recruitment, postponed on Wednesday, shall be notified on Thursday evening. There will be no PST and PET exam on Thursday,” Controller Examination JKSSB said.

Meanwhile, students from different areas putting up as Paying Guests (PGs) or in rented accommodations were panicked on Wednesday after some residential areas of Srinagar were inundated due to overflow of water.

The students preparing for different competitive exams, and those getting coaching at different coaching centres at Srinagar, were panicky and concerned about the safety of their belongings and study material kept inside rooms.
