SRINAGAR: In a landmark moment for Jammu Kashmir’s medical community, Dr Rafi Ahmed Jan has become the first doctor from the region to be awarded the prestigious Fellowship of the Indian Society of Chest Physicians. The honour was conferred at the National Conference on Pulmonary Diseases (NAPCON) held this year in Jaipur.

The recognition places both Dr Jan and the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Government Medical College, Anantnag, on the national and global map of respiratory care. With this achievement, he has not only added another distinction to his career but has also amplified the standing of GMC Anantnag as an emerging centre of excellence in pulmonary medicine.

Dr Jan is already regarded as a trailblazer in the field. Last year, he became Kashmir’s first Fellow of the Indian Association for Bronchology, marking a significant milestone in the expanding domain of interventional pulmonology. The subspecialty, which employs minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat disorders of the lungs and chest, remains rare across South Asia.

His expertise spans a full spectrum of advanced procedures, including flexible and rigid bronchoscopy, airway stenting, pleural interventions, and complex bronchial therapies. Colleagues describe him as a clinician whose technical skill is matched by a deep commitment to teaching, research, and medical innovation.

Currently a Professor of Respiratory Medicine at GMC Anantnag, Dr Jan has spent more than two decades shaping pulmonary care in the region. His earlier tenure as Head of the Department of Internal and Pulmonary Medicine at SKIMS, Soura, established him as one of the most respected clinician-scholars in North India. Holding qualifications including MD, FCCP, and FACP, he has contributed extensively to medical literature and has led major CME programmes, symposia, and academic initiatives. His efforts in building and strengthening pulmonary societies across the region are widely recognised, as is his mentorship of a generation of young pulmonologists.

This year’s honour at NAPCON further elevates his institution. Under Dr Jan’s leadership, GMC Anantnag is increasingly being seen as a rising hub for clinical excellence, research output, and innovation in the field of respiratory health. The institution’s expanding reputation has begun attracting national and international attention.

Speaking after receiving the fellowship, Dr Jan said the achievement goes beyond personal recognition. “This is not just a personal milestone,” he noted. “It represents a collective achievement for GMC Anantnag, Kashmir’s healthcare community, and all those committed to advancing pulmonary medicine in regional settings.”

In a region where respiratory health challenges are compounded by environmental conditions, Dr Jan’s work stands as a significant contribution to public health, offering both progress and promise for the years ahead.
