SRINAGAR: Divisional Commissioner (Div Com) Kashmir, Anshul Garg, on Thursday inspected the 60 Million Litres Daily (MLD) Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) at Noorbagh, Srinagar, to assess its operational preparedness ahead of commissioning on October 31.
The plant, part of the Comprehensive Sewerage Scheme for Greater Srinagar, was launched under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) at an estimated cost of Rs 143 crore, later revised to Rs 157 crore.
Speaking to reporters, Garg said the 60 MLD facility, executed by the Urban Environmental Engineering Department (UEED) under the Housing and Urban Development Department, has already begun trial operations. Once commissioned, it will immediately serve around 15,000 households in Srinagar.
“This project marks a major step towards improving sanitation and environmental standards in Srinagar,” Garg said, adding that the administration is planning a second phase with a 70 MLD capacity to meet the growing demands of the city’s expanding population.
The Div Com directed the Superintending Engineer, UEED, to expedite acquisition of a dedicated power line for uninterrupted operation of the plant and finalise the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for utility shifting, tertiary treatment, automated quality monitoring, and other infrastructural needs within one week.
During his visit, Garg interacted with local residents and assured them that their grievances regarding sewerage and stormwater drainage would be addressed promptly.
Responding to media queries on the power situation in Kashmir, Garg said power supply remains a top administrative priority. “Regular reviews are being held at both the UT and divisional levels. Maintenance, tree pruning, and transformer augmentation are under way to ensure better preparedness for the winter,” he said.
The Div Com was accompanied by the Commissioner, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), Additional Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, and officials from the Revenue Department and UEED.
