SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday emphasized the need for justice and reconciliation, urging authorities to release detainees with minor charges and revoke cases against those recently arrested, framing it as a gesture of goodwill ahead of Ramzan and Eid.

CM Omar made the remarks while inaugurating the Almond Blossom Festival at Badamwari, Srinagar, describing the event as a platform to showcase Kashmir’s tourism potential and engage local youth in cultural and economic activities.

Speaking to media, the Chief Minister said, “The release of Sonam Wangchuk is a positive development, though his arrest under the NSA should never have happened.”

Speaking on detained youth, he said, our government’s commitment and we always advocated that the youngsters who are first-time offenders, with minor charges should have their cases revoked and be released promptly. This is essential to restore trust and goodwill among the youth,” CM Omar said.

CM Omar also discussed the challenges facing Kashmir’s tourism sector, noting, “International ticket prices and fuel surcharges may affect the tourist flow, but we are hopeful that the natural beauty and cultural richness of Kashmir will continue to attract visitors.”

He concluded, “Events like the Almond Blossom Festival strengthen our social fabric, promote tourism, support livelihoods, and provide a stage for dialogue both locally and globally. Peace, justice, and youth engagement remain our top priorities.” (KNC)
