SRINAGAR: Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Akshay Labroo on Saturday launched the seventh round of vaccination against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) by flagging off mobile veterinary units from the Deputy Commissioner’s office premises.
The district-wide vaccination drive is being carried out by the District Sheep Husbandry Department to protect livestock and strengthen disease prevention measures across Srinagar. As part of the campaign, mobile veterinary units will visit villages, urban localities and remote areas to vaccinate livestock at the doorstep, ensuring easy access for farmers.
Officials said the drive aims to achieve complete vaccination coverage of sheep and other susceptible animals in the district. Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner underlined the importance of timely vaccination to protect livestock from Foot and Mouth Disease, which leads to significant economic losses for farmers and livestock owners.
He directed the concerned departments to ensure proper planning, monitoring and execution of the campaign so that all livestock pockets are covered effectively. He also appealed to livestock owners to cooperate with veterinary teams and ensure their animals are vaccinated.
The Deputy Commissioner said the seventh round of FMD vaccination forms part of the government’s sustained efforts to control animal diseases and improve livestock health, productivity and farmers’ livelihoods.
Officials informed that the campaign will benefit around 3,400 farming families across Srinagar district, covering nearly 58,000 sheep and goats and about 28,000 cattle through free-of-cost vaccination services.
District Sheep Husbandry Officer Dr Mohammad Ashraf, along with veterinary officers, field staff and other officials of the department, were present during the launch of the drive.
