CUK’s Journalism Department marks World Photography Day with contest, lectures

Ganderbal, Aug 19: The Department of Communication and Journalism (DCJ), School of Media Studies, Central University of Kashmir (CUK), celebrated World Photography Day at its Tulmulla campus on Tuesday with lectures, discussions, and a photography contest.

Dean Academic Affairs and Dean, School of Media Studies, Prof. Shahid Rasool, in his address, described photography as “a language of truth” and “a creative art” that plays a vital role in storytelling.

“A single image often has the power to capture emotions, preserve history, and inspire change,” he said, while urging students to use the camera responsibly and ethically. Filmmaker Gaurav Kumar, delivering a lecture and presentation on the theme Film Your Film, highlighted the significance of framing, lighting, editing, and sound in cinema and advertising. He encouraged students to see photography and filmmaking as complementary skills essential in the modern media landscape.

Head of DCJ, Dr. Arif Nazir, underscored the growing importance of visual media in contemporary society and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to fostering creativity and professional excellence among its students. Programme coordinator Dr. John Babu Koyye said World Photography Day is an occasion to honour the art, craft, science, and history of photography. A photography contest titled My Favorite Photo was also organised. Danish Mohiuddin and Iqbal Feroz bagged the first and second prizes, while the third prize was shared by Asif Bashir, Majid Hussain, and Khalid Bhat. Faculty members, research scholars, and students attended the event.
