Handwara: The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission Kupwara, in collaboration with the Bar Association Handwara, on Tuesday organised a Consumer Rights Awareness Camp at Monarch School Handwara. The initiative drew wide participation from lawyers, traders, students, journalists, and members of civil society, reflecting growing interest in consumer welfare issues.
Presiding over the programme, Judge Peerzada Qousar underscored the need to strengthen consumer protection mechanisms at the grassroots level. “We must ensure that every citizen knows how to protect themselves against exploitation in trade and services. InshaAllah, such awareness camps will continue in future as well,” he said, assuring sustained efforts to build legal awareness among the public.
Speakers at the camp stressed that lack of awareness is one of the biggest hurdles to achieving consumer justice. They encouraged people to demand receipts for every purchase, resist unfair trade practices, and approach the Consumer Court whenever their rights are violated. Representatives of the Traders Federation and other dignitaries present also pledged support to consumer-friendly initiatives.
The programme concluded with a joint pledge from the judiciary, legal fraternity, and traders to work collectively for safeguarding consumer rights in Kupwara district. Participants agreed that continuous awareness campaigns and community participation were vital to ensure fair practices in trade and services.
