Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Congress on Sunday declined the Rajya Sabha seat proposal offered by its ally, the National Conference (NC), describing it as “risky and politically untenable.”
The decision came after an exhaustive four-and-a-half-hour deliberation of the Pradesh Congress Committee, which ultimately chose caution over compromise.
“We held a detailed discussion on the Rajya Sabha elections. The consensus was clear that our leadership had sought a more secure seat, either the first or second, but the NC’s offer was for the fourth, which carries greater electoral uncertainty,” said J&K Congress chief Tariq Hamid Karra, while addressing reporters here.
Karra said that the party has formally communicated its stance to the NC leadership. “We wrote to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressing our position. He advised us to forward the letter to Dr. Farooq Abdullah, which we have done. We await a formal response,” he added.
Karra took the occasion to acknowledge “visible discontent” among party members regarding governance gaps, developmental stagnation, and the absence of an effective coordination mechanism among alliance partners.
