SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday announced that the Jammu and Kashmir Government will develop nine new tourism destinations as part of a major sustainability-focused megaproject, calling it a transformative step aimed at reshaping the region’s tourism landscape. The announcement came during the launch of the SKÅL International Club, Kashmir Chapter, in Srinagar—an initiative expected to strengthen global linkages and enhance the international outreach of the Valley’s travel sector.

The Chief Minister said the nine planned destinations would be developed through “environmentally responsible, community-centric” models designed to promote long-term and sustainable growth. “Tourism, or any industry that does not benefit locals, is an industry that will not survive,” he said, underscoring local involvement as a core element of the new development push.

He asserted that sustainability must guide future tourism planning. “If tourism is not responsible and sustainable, it will not last. A cornerstone of our recent activities has been to make tourism more responsible and more sustainable,” he said.

The launch of the SKÅL Chapter—part of a global network promoting friendship and collaboration in the travel industry—was described as a timely step in expanding J&K’s outreach. Omar said the values embodied in SKÅL align naturally with the ethos of Kashmir. “The word SKÅL translates to good health, friendship, long life and happiness. These are principles that mirror the spirit of our tourism community, where competition exists without eroding camaraderie,” he said.

He added that the philosophy of “business with friends” resonates strongly in the region. “Here, many in the industry may compete, but they remain friends. They dine together and respect each other—and that is exactly what SKÅL stands for,” he said.

Speaking about the resilience of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, the Chief Minister said the region’s history of highs and lows in tourism had strengthened its resolve. “Yes, there is darkness, but it will not remain forever. Winters last for a few months; after that, snow melts and spring arrives. My desire and effort is that this spring lasts for years,” he said.

Omar thanked SKÅL International for choosing Kashmir for a new chapter and expressed hope that the partnership will lead to lasting gains. “This is a great start to a new relationship. I hope we will continue to host such programmes and move forward together,” he said.

MLA Zadibal Tanvir Sadiq, National President SKÅL Sanjeev Mehra, Director SKÅL NSN Mohan, industry stakeholders, and senior officials attended the event. The ceremony included oath-taking by board and founder members, followed by pinning and presentation of certificates.
