SRINAGAR: Ghulam Ahmad Peer, a former Commissioner Secretary to the Government of Jammu and Kashmir, passed away at his Srinagar residence after a prolonged illness. He was suffering from a neuro motor disease and had been bedridden for nearly a year. Peer was also the father of noted author and journalist Basharat Peer.
Condolences have poured in from across the political and administrative spectrum, with senior leaders and officials recalling his integrity, commitment, and distinguished service to the erstwhile state.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and NC President Dr Farooq Abdullah also expressed profound grief over Peer’s passing. In their joint statement, they described him as “a thorough gentleman and a dedicated public servant who discharged his duties with honesty and grace”.

Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo expressed deep sorrow over the demise, remembering Peer as a principled officer who served Jammu and Kashmir with distinction. “His contributions to public service and governance in Jammu and Kashmir have left an enduring legacy. He will be remembered for his integrity, professional competence, and calm demeanour,” he said, while offering prayers for the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family.
PDP President Mehbooba Mufti, in a post on X, wrote, “Saddened by the death of an efficient and compassionate officer G A Peer. He served the state with distinction and integrity. May Allah grant him a place in Jannat. Deepest condolences to his illustrious son Basharat and the family.”

Apni Party Vice President Ghulam Hassan Mir said he had a long association with Peer and described him as “a soft-spoken, helpful and lovely person”. “His contribution is enormous in different capacities,” he added in his condolence message.

G A Peer had served in various capacities during his administrative career, including as Deputy Commissioner, before retiring as Commissioner Secretary.
