SRINAGAR: On the eve of the Jammu Kashmir Assembly session, the Jammu Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) held an important Legislature Party meeting in Srinagar on Wednesday evening to deliberate on the session’s agenda, major legislative matters, and the party’s approach within the House.
The meeting was chaired by party president Farooq Abdullah and attended by vice-president CM Omar Abdullah, along with senior party legislators and other functionaries.
Speaking to reporters, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said, “This is the customary Legislature Party meeting of the National Conference ahead of the Assembly session. We met today along with MY Tarigami and the independent members to chalk out our strategy for the session.”
Omar expressed confidence that the National Conference (NC) would win all four seats in the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for 24 October. He also urged Legislative Assembly Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma to refrain from making baseless statements.
He added, “This session is different because, after 10 years, the Rajya Sabha elections are scheduled the day after tomorrow. The strategy discussed today is aimed at ensuring the success of our four candidates. I thank all the members for attending the meeting.”
When asked about the absence of Congress representatives despite invitations, Omar Abdullah said, “Congress is a separate party and has its own strategy and system.”
Regarding reports that the PDP has agreed to support NC candidates, he remarked, “Our candidate, Shami Oberoi, has met Mehbooba Mufti and requested support for the NC candidates. Our president has also spoken to her, and she has consented to discuss it with her party leaders.”
Sources said that Farooq Abdullah during the meeting emphasized the importance of unity and discipline within the party during the session. “This Assembly is the voice of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Every member carries the responsibility of articulating the pain, aspirations, and needs of our people with dignity and courage,” he said.
CM Omar Abdullah also called for a focused and issue-based approach during the Assembly proceedings. “This session provides an opportunity to highlight the concerns of our people. We will support any measure that benefits the people, but we will not hesitate to question or oppose policies that hurt their interests,” he said.
