SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday assured families affected by recent floods in Reasi district that comprehensive relief measures and long-term rehabilitation plans were being put into motion. He visited Mahore to meet victims of the devastation and assess the damage caused by unprecedented rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir.

Accompanied by MLA Gulabgarh Er Khurshied Ahmed and senior officials, Abdullah undertook an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas before addressing gatherings of displaced and affected families. The Chief Minister expressed solidarity with the victims, offering condolences for the loss of lives and property while pledging sustained government support for rebuilding efforts.

Recalling the challenges faced by the Union Territory this year, Abdullah noted that Jammu and Kashmir had shifted from the threat of severe drought earlier in February–April to widespread flooding that affected regions from Kathua to Kupwara. He acknowledged that lapses in planning and road construction practices, including mountain cutting, may have worsened damage through landslides and road collapses, with thousands of kilometres of PWD and PMGSY roads severely impacted.

Speaking directly to affected residents, Abdullah emphasised that the government’s efforts would extend beyond immediate relief, focusing on restoring livelihoods, infrastructure, and dignity. “We will not only help you tide over the immediate crisis but also ensure that your lives are rebuilt afresh with dignity and resilience,” he said.
