SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said the government is planning to develop modern and well-planned housing colonies to reduce congestion in Srinagar city and ensure dignified housing for underprivileged sections, stating that providing shelter is both a responsibility and a duty of the government.
He made the remarks after inaugurating the Imam-ul-Asr Maulana Anwar Shah Kashmiri (RA) Community Hall at Umerhair, Buchpora in Hazratbal constituency. The multi-purpose facility, constructed at a cost of Rs 3.17 crore, will serve as an affordable and accessible venue for weddings, social functions, and community gatherings.
Addressing a large public gathering, the Chief Minister said Srinagar continues to face significant congestion, particularly in the old city areas, where multiple families often live in limited residential spaces. He said the situation cannot be resolved without the development of new planned housing colonies.
“We are planning modern, well-planned housing colonies with provisions for affordable housing, especially for those who cannot afford land or construction. Providing dignified housing is not just a responsibility—it is our duty,” he said.
Omar Abdullah also outlined key governance priorities, including strengthening healthcare infrastructure by upgrading primary health centres, community health centres, and sub-district hospitals to reduce pressure on major hospitals.
On transport reforms, he said the introduction of free bus travel for women has received strong public response, with women now forming a majority of passengers in public transport. He described it as a step towards safe and accessible mobility for women.
Referring to welfare commitments, the Chief Minister said the government is delivering on its promises, including the provision of six free LPG cylinders to eligible families this year. He reiterated that all manifesto commitments would be implemented with transparency and accountability.
Congratulating MLA Hazratbal Salman Ali Sagar, he said the completion of the community hall reflects dedication and public service. He added that the facility will benefit families who cannot afford private venues for social events and is equipped with modern amenities including a large hall, multiple rooms, designated spaces, and parking facilities.
He directed the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) to prepare a comprehensive development plan for the surrounding area, including parking and landscaping, to improve functionality and aesthetics.
Emphasising youth engagement, the Chief Minister called for setting up a library near the facility and assured full government support. He also proposed preserving the legacy of Maulana Anwar Shah Kashmiri (RA) through a dedicated section in the library.
The event was attended by legislators, advisors, parliamentarians, senior officials, and a large gathering of people.
