Srinagar: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday announced launch of an intensive eight-week, door-to-door campaign across union territory to mobilise public support for the restoration of statehood status to Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking at the Independence Day function in Srinagar, Abdullah said he and his colleagues would personally visit every Legislative Assembly segment, reaching out to households to collect signatures and thumb impressions for the cause.

“The Supreme Court has given us eight weeks, and we will not waste a single day. We will go to every household, ensuring no individual is left out. Those who cannot sign will have their thumb impressions recorded,” the Chief Minister said.

Reflecting on the political changes since August 2019, Abdullah noted, “It has been more than six years since the people of Jammu and Kashmir heard their own representative from this platform. Back then, I was the Chief Minister of a state with its own identity, constitution, flag, and statehood. Today, all of that is gone.”

He said while democracy’s return had been a long wait, the region now had an elected government. “We hoped for a significant announcement for J&K on this Independence Day. I was even told that papers for statehood were being prepared. But nothing came,” Abdullah remarked.
