SRINAGAR: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has launched a preliminary inquiry into alleged violations of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) by climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL), an official confirmed on Thursday, as per multiple media reports.

According to the official, the inquiry began about two months ago following a complaint from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and remains ongoing. Wangchuk said a CBI team visited him around 10 days ago with an “order” citing the MHA’s complaint on alleged violations, reports The Indian Express.

The development comes amid heightened tensions in Ladakh, where four people were killed in police firing during violent protests demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status. Protesters, led by the Leh Apex Body’s youth wing, clashed with security forces and set fire to a BJP office after two hunger strikers were hospitalised following 35 days of protest.

Hours after the violence, the MHA accused Wangchuk of inciting the mob with “provocative statements”, alleging that politically motivated individuals were attempting to derail ongoing dialogue between Ladakh groups and the Centre.

Wangchuk, who ended his 15-day hunger strike after the clashes, appealed to Ladakhi youth through a social media post to maintain non-violence and protect the integrity of the five-year-old movement.

An engineer and innovator recognised for his sustainable initiatives, Wangchuk received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2018. He also inspired a character in the 2009 Hindi film 3 Idiots.
