Sopore, August 20: After four days of relentless search operations, the body of an elderly drowned fisherman was finally recovered from the River Jhelum near checkroday Khan area in Sopore on Wednesday early morning.
The deceased has been identified as Ali Mohammad Dar 65, son-in-law of Mohammad Subhan Dar, a resident of Muslimpeer Sopore. According to reports, Ali Mohammad had gone for his routine fishing activity on Sunday, 17th August 2025, but tragically drowned while returning.
Soon after the incident, a large-scale rescue operation was launched by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police, and volunteers from the area. Despite continuous efforts, the strong currents of the river delayed the recovery of his body, which was ultimately fished out today after four days.
Eyewitnesses and locals revealed that his fishing boat was found broken near the Jamia Bridge in Sopore, raising immediate concerns about his safety. Since then, his disappearance had cast a shadow of grief over the community, with hundreds of residents joining the search and offering support to the family.
Authorities later handed over the body to his relatives after completing the necessary legal formalities.
Meanwhile, a pall of gloom descended in Muslimpeer Sopore, where mourners in large numbers participated in the last rites of the deceased. The tragic loss has left the family and community in deep mourning, remembering Ali Mohammad as a hardworking and humble man.
