Budgam, Mar 31: In a decisive move against illegal mining, the District Mineral Officer (DMO) of Budgam, accompanied by a specialized enforcement team, conducted a targeted raid in the Beerwah area on Tuesday.
The operation was carried out following reports of unauthorized extraction and storage of clay in the locality. During the raid, officials successfully seized a substantial quantity of clay that had been illegally mined and stockpiled, allegedly for commercial use without proper permission from the authorities.
According to officials, illegal mining has been a growing concern in several parts of Budgam district, causing environmental degradation, loss of government revenue, and damage to agricultural land. The enforcement team acted swiftly to identify the site and take necessary action against those involved.
Sources within the department revealed that further investigations are underway to trace the individuals or groups responsible for the illegal activity. Legal action is expected to be initiated under relevant mining and environmental laws.
Officials from the Geology and Mining Department stated that this raid is part of an ongoing and intensified campaign aimed at dismantling networks involved in illegal extraction, commonly referred to as the “land mafia.” The department has also been coordinating with local authorities to monitor vulnerable areas and prevent such activities.
The DMO reiterated the administration’s commitment to safeguarding natural resources and maintaining ecological balance in the district. He warned that strict action will be taken against violators, and similar raids will continue in the coming days to ensure compliance with the law.
Residents of the area have welcomed the move, expressing hope that consistent enforcement will put an end to illegal mining practices and protect the environment in the long run.
