SRINAGAR: Authorities in Sopore town of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district have directed street vendors to stop using artificial colours and chemical additives in the preparation of the popular street snack ‘Aalu Manj’, warning of strict legal action against violators.

Officials said the move follows multiple complaints from residents alleging that some vendors were adding synthetic colours and chemicals to enhance the appearance and taste of the snack, which could pose serious risks to public health.

Tehsildar Sopore Sheikh Tariq confirmed that instructions had been issued to all vendors selling the snack in local markets.

“Complaints have been received regarding the use of colours in the fries. All vendors are hereby warned to stop these unhealthy practices immediately,” Tariq said.

He said vendors must ensure that food sold to the public is clean, hygienic and free from harmful additives.

“Only hygienic food should be sold. Anyone found violating these orders will face legal consequences,” the Tehsildar added.

Aalu Manj’, a deep-fried gram-flour fritter snack, is widely sold by roadside vendors across Sopore and other parts of north Kashmir and is especially popular among school students and shoppers.

Officials said that the administration had taken note of growing concerns over food adulteration, particularly the use of industrial food colours that may not be approved for consumption.

The local administration has also urged residents to remain vigilant and report any instances of food adulteration to authorities.

Meanwhile, officials said surprise inspection drives will be carried out in the coming days to check compliance with the directive and to ensure that vendors adhere to food safety norms.

Authorities said vendors found violating the instructions could face penalties under food safety regulations. [KNT]
