Srinagar: An unfortunate incident unfolded at the Community Health Centre (CHC) Kralgund in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Sunday when a doctor and medical staff were allegedly assaulted by an attendant, leaving hospital services severely disrupted.

Reports reaching Alfaaz – The Words, said the attendant physically attacked the medical team, causing injuries to a doctor and other staff members, even as one of the doctors’ reportedly sustained serious injuries in the assault.

The incident forced the staff to shift to the local police station for safety and to lodge a formal complaint.

Meanwhile, patients were left without timely medical attention amid the tumultuous situation.

Meanwhile, in the aftermath, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) strongly condemned the assault, terming it “barbaric, unacceptable, and a direct attack on the medical fraternity that serves people selflessly, even under challenging circumstances.”

DAK President Dr. M Y Tak described the incident as intolerable, stating; “Such shameful conduct is an attack on the very foundation of our healthcare system. Authorities must ensure that perpetrators face the full force of law so that such incidents do not recur.”

Dr. Ayjaz Ahmad Bhat, President DAK Kupwara, added that the assault on medical staff at PHC Kralgund, along with the slapping of an on-duty staff member at CHC Kralgund, is a “reprehensible act that undermines the principles of ethics, humanity, and decency in a civilised society. Violence against healthcare professionals cannot and will not be tolerated.”

Echoing the sentiment, Dr. Gulzar, Senior Vice President DAK Kupwara, stressed that doctors and allied health staff work round-the-clock, often in resource-limited conditions, to provide uninterrupted services. “Any form of aggression or intimidation not only demoralises the workforce but also disrupts the delivery of essential health services,” he said.

DAK has called for a thorough and time-bound investigation, strict punitive action against the perpetrators, and enhanced security measures across health facilities. The association also urged civil society, community leaders, and the administration to unite in condemning such incidents and reinforcing the message that healthcare institutions must remain sanctuaries of safety and respect.

When contacted, a police official said the accused was arrested soon after the incident. “An FIR vide 38/2025 under relevant sections has been registered against the accused, and further investigations are underway,” the official told Alfaaz – The Words.
