Army celebrates 10th Armed Forces veterans day in Kupwara

Kupwara, Jan 14: The Indian Army on Wednesday celebrated 10th Armed Forces Veterans Day at Drugmulla in Kupwara district, commemorating the superannuation anniversary of Field Marshal KM Cariappa, the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces.

The event was organised to honour the courage, sacrifice, and lifelong service of the nation’s veterans. Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Shrikant Balasaheb Suse, attended the programme as the chief guest. Several senior officials, ex-servicemen, Veer Matas, Veer Naris, and gallantry awardees were also present. Despite harsh weather conditions , the programme witnessed a large turnout, reflecting the unwavering spirit of the soldiers. Around 500 veterans and 20 Veer Naris participated in the event.

Speaking on the occasion, an ex-serviceman, Abdul Rashid Khan, said, “We feel proud to have served the nation. Such events remind us that our sacrifices are remembered and respected”. Another veteran, Mohammad Yousuf from Hyhama Kupwara, said the initiative strengthened the bond between the Army and former soldiers. “This platform gives us an opportunity to share our concerns and stay connected with the forces we once served,” he said. The programme aimed not only to acknowledge their contribution but also to address their grievances and spread awareness about various welfare schemes. Information regarding Central and State Government welfare projects was shared with the attendees.

For on-the-spot assistance, stalls were set up by the Community Service Centre, ECHS, Zila Sainik Board, Military Hospital, JAK LI Records, and various banks. Deputy Commissioner Kupwara felicitated the veterans and Veer Naris, paying rich tributes to the war heroes who laid down their lives in the line of duty. He assured the gathering of continuous support from the administration.
