SRINAGAR: The approach road of the Fourth Tawi Bridge at Bhagwati Nagar in Jammu collapsed on Wednesday following heavy rains and rising water levels in the Tawi River, disrupting traffic on the vital link that connects Satwari with the city.

Reports said that a significant portion of the road caved in as floodwaters lashed the embankments. The sudden collapse forced authorities to halt movement on the bridge and deploy emergency teams to secure the area.

Officials said that the continuous downpour has weakened several sections of the road, and with the river flowing in spate, the approach at Bhagwati Nagar could not withstand the pressure. The bridge is a key link for commuters and also serves as an alternate route to the city when other roads face congestion.

Traffic police and civil authorities have advised people to stay away from the affected stretch and to strictly follow diversions. “The area has been declared unsafe and no movement will be allowed till further notice,” an official said.

The fresh damage comes only days after the Army had restored connectivity with a Bailey bridge when floods earlier had rendered the stretch unsafe. [KNT]
