Jerusalem: For the first time since 1967, Israeli authorities have closed the Al-Aqsa Mosque at the end of Ramadan, preventing Muslim worshippers from offering Eid prayers at the site.

Hundreds prayed outside Jerusalem’s Old City after Israeli police sealed entrances, citing security concerns linked to regional tensions, including the US-Israel conflict with Iran.

Palestinians condemned the move as part of a broader strategy to tighten restrictions and assert control over the mosque compound, known to Muslims as Al-Haram al-Sharif.

Religious leaders urged worshippers to pray at the nearest accessible points, while tensions remained high amid increased arrests, restricted access, and heavy security presence in the area.

The closure has drawn strong condemnation from international bodies, including the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, which termed it a violation of religious freedom and international law.

Meanwhile, in Gaza, Eid preparations continue under the shadow of war, with displacement, shortages, and ongoing violence dampening celebrations despite a partial reopening of aid routes. (Agencies)
