Srinagar: The war of words within the National Conference burst into the open on Thursday after Srinagar MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi launched a sharp counterattack on senior party colleague and Cabinet Minister Sakina Itoo.
Responding to Itoo’s earlier rebuke that he should “speak in Parliament, not point fingers here,” Ruhullah accused unnamed leaders of bowing in submission instead of resisting oppression.
“Those who bowed in obedience cannot raise their eyes to see the struggle of those who resist oppression,” Ruhullah’s office posted on X.
The statement listed issues the MP has already raised in Parliament, from the apple crisis and release of detainees to Waqf encroachments, health facilities, road and rail projects, and financial aid for patients through the PM’s relief fund. His office also pointed to the disbursal of more than five crore rupees under MPLADS and recent talks with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari to push the highway up to Sonmarg.
“Everything is on record, accessible to all. Those advising us to just ‘talk’ should remember, while their obedience brought them ease, it left us to shoulder the hard duty of challenging oppressive power,” the post read.
The sharp retort comes after Sakina Itoo remarked that Ruhullah had been elected to represent J&K’s concerns in Delhi, not criticise the NC-led government in Jammu and Kashmir. She had insisted his job was to “raise core issues in Parliament” and warned that criticism at home “won’t help students or the education system.”
