SRINAGAR: Following intensive relief work in Paddar, where a cloudburst claimed over 60 lives, local NGO Ababeel has extended its humanitarian efforts to Kathua district, where a similar tragedy killed seven people last week.

On Sunday, Ababeel volunteers reached Kathua and provided essential supplies to 21 families affected by the cloudburst. The aid package included food and basic necessities aimed at helping survivors manage immediate post-disaster challenges.

The relief operation follows a four-day deployment in Paddar by over 30 Ababeel volunteers, who used their own ambulance fleet to assist with rescue and medical services in the remote Chenab Valley. Their swift response in the aftermath of the disaster garnered attention, particularly given the region’s limited infrastructure and communication challenges during extreme weather events.

“Our focus is not only on providing emergency supplies but also on showing survivors they are not alone,” said one of the organisation’s team members. “We aim to reach wherever help is needed.”

Ababeel’s ability to rapidly mobilise resources—including transport, medical aid, and manpower—has allowed the NGO to fill critical gaps in the official response during natural calamities. The NGO has placed its volunteer teams on alert to respond to future emergencies.
