SRINAGAR: The Department of Handicrafts and Handloom on Saturday launched the “Know Your Artisan” initiative at the Jehlum Riverfront. The programme, inaugurated by Commissioner Secretary of Industries and Commerce Department, Vikramjit Singh, is part of the “Soulful Kashmir” campaign and aims to reconnect artisans with the community through direct engagement and cultural outreach.
The event marks the first in a series of cultural programmes planned across Srinagar over the next two months. Director of Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir, Mussarat Islam, along with other senior officials, attended the inaugural ceremony.
An official spokesman said the initiative underscores the Government’s commitment to preserving and promoting Kashmir’s centuries-old craft traditions that form the “cultural identity and economic fabric of the Valley.” He added that the event seeks to bring artisans and consumers together in interactive spaces, highlighting the people and stories behind Kashmir’s globally admired handicrafts.
The launch featured live demonstrations, artisan interactions, and sales counters, complemented by cultural performances and branding activities. Among the featured masters were Mushtaq Ahmad (Pashmina Weaving), Maqbool Ahmad Jan (Papier-Mâché), Padma Shri awardee Farooq Ahmad Mir (Kani Shawl Weaving), Mehboob Ali Beigh (Sozni Embroidery), Shahnawaz Sofi (Hand-Knotted Carpets), Mohammad Yousuf Muran (Walnut Wood Carving), and Ali Mohammad Giru (Khatambandh Craftsmanship).
Speaking on the occasion, Vikramjit Singh described the initiative as “a beacon for artisans,” adding, “By celebrating Soulful Kashmir, we not only preserve our heritage but also weave it into the future of economic empowerment.”
According to officials, the “Know Your Artisan” series will strengthen market linkages, enhance brand visibility, and provide artisans with direct access to consumers and tourists. The initiative is expected to boost sales, expand promotional opportunities, and encourage sustainable growth within the crafts sector.
