Srinagar: In a major action against the sale of unsafe and substandard food products, the Food Safety Department Srinagar on Thursday seized around five quintals of Namkeen snacks and sealed an unlicensed manufacturing unit operating from Abhanshah, HMT area of the city.

According to officials, the operation was carried out by a team of Food Safety Officers led by the Assistant Commissioner, Food Safety Srinagar, as part of the department’s ongoing drive to ensure food hygiene and regulatory compliance.

During the inspection, the unit was found functioning without a valid licence and in unhygienic conditions. About five quintals of various Namkeen items, including katlam and finni, were seized on the spot, while samples were lifted for detailed laboratory analysis.

The premises were subsequently sealed, and the manufacturing activity was halted with immediate effect. Authorities said a formal complaint under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the corresponding Rules and Regulations, 2011, will be filed before the competent court.

Commissioner, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Smitha Sethi, urged all food business operators to strictly adhere to licensing and hygiene norms under the Food Safety and Standards Act. She warned that violators would face strict legal consequences.

The department has also appealed to the public to remain alert and report any food safety violations or complaints through the toll-free helpline 104.
