SRINAGAR: Fear has gripped Gousia Colony in Bemina, Srinagar, where residents say over a hundred stray dogs have taken over four lanes, posing a grave threat to public safety. The situation turned alarming on Monday when an elderly woman was reportedly chased and bitten by a pack of dogs, sparking outrage in the locality.

Locals say that the stray dog population in the colony has grown unchecked for months. Despite repeated complaints, they said, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has failed to act. “My elderly mother was bitten after being chased by stray dogs. It is shameful that SMC has ignored such a dangerous situation,” a resident said.

Residents added that venturing out in the morning and evening hours has become risky, especially for children and senior citizens. “Even school-going children are scared to step outside. We are living in fear,” another local said.

The residents have urged the SMC to immediately launch a large-scale sterilisation and relocation drive and deploy dog-catching teams without delay to prevent further incidents.

Efforts to reach the SMC Commissioner did not materialise. [KNT]
