SRINAGAR: Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Sunil Sharma on Saturday visited Margi village in the remote Warwan area of Kishtwar district, which has been devastated by incessant rains and flash floods, leaving many families homeless and cutting off road connectivity.
Accompanied by BJP leaders including Haji Tariq Keen, District President Ravi Parihar, General Secretary Prashant Bhandari, Mansoor Mattoo, President of the Minority Morcha, Samir Ganaie, and Santosh Bhandari, Sharma assessed the widespread damage. The calamity has washed away several houses and disrupted essential services, creating acute shortages of food, drinking water, medicines, and shelter.
Sharma, along with local administration officials, met affected residents, listened to their grievances, and promised to raise the matter at the highest levels to ensure immediate relief and rehabilitation. He called for the urgent deployment of temporary shelters, emergency food, medical assistance, and restoration of road links.
He also appealed to NGOs and civil society organisations to assist the affected population and emphasised the need for a long-term plan to strengthen infrastructure in remote areas like Warwan to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events. “Our remote areas need better preparedness, not just sympathy after disaster strikes,” he said.
The visit comes amid growing concerns over the vulnerability of Kishtwar’s remote villages to flash floods and heavy rainfall, which have repeatedly disrupted lives and livelihoods.
