SRINAGAR: Internet services, including broadband and mobile networks, have remained suspended in Doda district for the past four days after the detention of MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA), leaving students and businesses in distress.
Deputy Commissioner Doda, Harvinder Singh, said the suspension was necessary to prevent the spread of misinformation. “The internet will be restored in the coming days,” he told reporters on Saturday.
However, students and traders voiced frustration over the prolonged shutdown. Hasina Kouser, preparing for competitive examinations, said she was unable to register online for her IGNOU post-graduation course. “Initially, I thought the restrictions would be lifted soon, but now I fear losing an academic year,” she said.
Another student from Dhara area, where roads have been blocked for two weeks, said he had no means of submitting forms. “With travel impossible and the internet shut, I am stranded,” he lamented.
Local businesses have also been hit hard. Shopkeeper Mudassir Hussain said most of his operations rely on internet services. “Our shop has remained closed for days. I have loans to repay and employees’ salaries pending. With mounting losses, I doubt I will manage this month’s obligations,” he said.
The district continues under restrictions imposed under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). While some relaxation has been reported in certain areas, internet services remain completely blocked.
