JAMMU: With flood-like conditions continuing across the Jammu region, authorities have ordered the closure of all government and private schools till August 27. The decision, officials said, was taken to ensure the safety of students as torrential rains submerged several low-lying areas and disrupted normal life.

The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education also postponed the Class 10 and 11 examinations scheduled for Wednesday. “Fresh dates will be notified separately,” the board announced.

The weather-related disruptions have not only hit education but also other activities in the region. The Border Security Force (BSF) suspended its ongoing constable recruitment drive at Paloura Camp in Jammu, pushing Tuesday’s tests to September 3. The recruitment process involves candidates for the Central Armed Police Forces, the Special Security Force and the Assam Rifles.

Meanwhile, three people were reported dead and more than two dozen houses and bridges damaged as heavy rainfall lashed the region. With most water bodies flowing above the danger mark, parts of Jammu city and adjoining districts have been inundated.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described the situation as “quite serious” and said he would travel from Srinagar to Jammu to personally monitor the response.

Director of School Education (Jammu) Naseem Javaid Chowdhary said, “In view of the prevailing inclement weather conditions and the occurrence of flood-like situations at various places across the region, it is hereby ordered that all government and private schools in the Jammu Division shall continue to remain closed on August 27.
