SRINAGAR: Authorities on Monday sounded an alert in parts of Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir after the water level at Ranjeet Sagar Dam in Basholi touched the danger mark of 527 meters.

Officials said that to ease the pressure, around 6,500 cusecs of water was released into the Ravi river. The sudden increase in flow has raised concerns for residents living along the riverbanks.

Local administration has issued an advisory urging people residing near the Ravi river to stay away from the banks and, if necessary, leave vulnerable areas immediately. The advisory also asked villagers not to venture close to the river for grazing cattle or for other activities.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have assured that precautionary measures are in place to prevent any loss of life or property. [KNT]
