SRINAGAR: Delhi Public School (DPS) Srinagar on Sunday turned into a vibrant stage for Indian classical music as it hosted a concert celebrating the country’s rich cultural heritage. Organised by Benu Heritage in collaboration with the Sopori Academy of Music and Performing Arts (SaMaPa) and supported by the CSR initiative of Matrix Freight Systems Pvt. Ltd., the event drew a distinguished gathering.
The concert was attended by the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir as the Chief Guest, alongside senior civil and police officials, including the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, and Senior Superintendent of Police Srinagar. Also present were Smt. Padmaja Chakraborty, Chairperson of Benu Trust, Prof Aparna Sopori, Chairperson of SaMaPa, Chairman of DPS Srinagar Vijay Dhar, Principal Ms Shafaq Afshan, faculty members, and students.
The programme opened with a welcome address by student anchors of Class 8 and a serene school prayer. A soulful vocal recital by Ojesh Pratap Singh set the tone, followed by a graceful performance in a classical raag by Grade 4 students. The highlights of the concert included a spellbinding Santoor performance by maestro Abhay Rustum Sopori and a mesmerising flute recital by the legendary Pt Chetan Joshi, leaving the audience deeply moved.
The Lieutenant Governor, joined by Vijay Dhar, felicitated the artists, with Ms Sadhna Srivastav presenting honours on behalf of Benu Heritage. The event concluded with a vote of thanks and the National Anthem.
Speaking on the occasion, Vijay Dhar said, “It is a profound honour for DPS Srinagar to welcome maestros who are the living custodians of India’s classical tradition. Encounters like these sow the seeds of cultural appreciation and lasting inspiration for young minds.”
Principal Ms. Shafaq Afshan added that the students’ participation alongside eminent artists validated the school’s emphasis on culture-driven education. “By bringing living heritage directly to our campus, we have enriched our students’ artistic confidence and connection to their roots,” she said.
The concert was hailed as a landmark in the school’s cultural journey, successfully bridging legendary artists with the next generation of patrons and performers.
