Sopore, Aug 23: A friendly cricket match between Sopore Media XI and Hamza Cricket Club Haritaar was held to raise awareness about drug abuse and encourage youth to embrace sports as a healthy alternative, organisers said.
The event, themed “Avoid Drugs, Play Sports,” drew wide attention from locals, sports enthusiasts, and community members who gathered in large numbers to witness the spirited contest. The initiative highlighted how sports can play a pivotal role in channeling the energy of young people towards constructive and positive activities.
The match was graced by MLA Wagoora-Kreeri, Irfan Hafiz Lone, who attended as the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, Lone praised the organisers for taking such a meaningful step to combine sports with social awareness. He emphasised that drug addiction is a growing concern in society and that community-driven initiatives like these are crucial to protect and guide the younger generation.
“Cricket and other sports not only keep the youth physically fit but also instill values of discipline, teamwork, and resilience. I strongly believe that sports is the best alternative to keep youngsters away from the menace of drugs,” Lone said in his address. Both teams displayed great sportsmanship and entertained the audience with competitive cricketing action. The crowd cheered loudly for every boundary, wicket, and good fielding effort, making the atmosphere lively and engaging.
Organisers of the event said that this was not just about cricket but about sending a strong message to society. They pledged to hold more such matches and awareness programmes in Sopore and adjoining areas to continue spreading the slogan “Avoid Drugs, Play Sports.”
