Srinagar: In a significant step towards ensuring consumer rights and fair trade practices in the e-commerce sector, Legal Metrology Department, Kulgam has imposed a penalty of Rs.1 lakh on a leading Amazon seller for violation of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.
The penal action follows an intensive inspection which revealed that the seller was displaying inflated net quantity on the product listings in the e-commerce marketplace while delivering reduced actual contents to consumers. This deceptive practice was found to be in contravention of packaging and labeling requirements mandated under the said rules.
The action was taken under the directions of Rajinder Singh Tara, Controller, Legal Metrology J&K, as part of a focused enforcement drive targeting irregularities in the e-commerce ecosystem.
Initially, notices were served to Amazon and its listed seller. Following detailed inquiry and persistent departmental follow-up, the seller admitted the lapse and opted to settle the matter by compounding the offence for an amount of Rs.1 lakh.
These efforts reiterate the Department’s unwavering resolve to safeguard consumer interests and bring greater accountability to the digital marketplace.
