Kupwara, August 18: Director Sericulture J&K Ajaz Ahmad Bhat today inaugurated the Cocoon Auction Market in border district Kupwara, with hundreds of silkworm rearers and buyers participating enthusiastically.
The inauguration marks a significant step in strengthening the sericulture sector and creating direct market linkages for farmers in the region.
Bhat conducted a thorough inspection of the market site and assessed auction proceedings. He interacted with silkworm rearers and buyers, emphasizing the department’s commitment to ensuring a transparent, farmer-friendly auctioning process.
“We are committed to providing all necessary facilities, including basic amenities and hygienic conditions to make this a vibrant trading environment,” Bhat said. The Kupwara auction continues till August 21, after which district-wise auctions will commence across Kashmir Division in phases.
Addressing the gathering, Bhat highlighted the department’s focus on strengthening marketing avenues for silkworm rearers. He informed that several new projects are underway to provide better facilities and assured markets for both buyers and sellers.
“We are organising cocoon auction markets across Kashmir to attract buyers not only from within J&K but also from outside the UT. This creates a competitive, transparent platform enabling better returns for farmers without long-distance travel,” he said.
The director emphasised the need for inclusive development and a proactive approach to uplift rural populations, especially weaker sections, through doorstep marketing support.
Bhat was accompanied by District Sericulture Officer Kupwara and senior department officials, reflecting the department’s dedication to comprehensive support for silkworm rearers in infrastructure, training, and marketing.
