Jammu, Jul 9: In a historic moment for Jammu & Kashmir in sports, Rajat Charak clinched the first-ever gold medal for Jammu and Kashmir at the Asia Cup Wushu Championship held in China from July 2 to 7, 2025.
As per a statement issued on Wednesday, representing India, Charak triumphed over a formidable opponent from Kazakhstan in the final bout, marking a major milestone for the region and adding to India’s impressive medal tally in the continental event.
Rajat was part of the 16-member Indian Wushu contingent, which delivered a remarkable performance overall, securing 3 gold, 3 silver, and 5 bronze medals. The Indian team was sanctioned by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and the Sports Authority of India, with full government support, including a one-month foreign exposure training camp in China prior to the championship.
Charak had previously earned a silver medal in the 2024 Asian Championship in Macau, China, which qualified him for this elite continental event. His continued rise on the international stage is backed by a consistent medal-winning record, and he is currently serving in the Indian Army.
On their return to India, the medal-winning athletes received a rousing welcome at Indira Gandhi International Airport, hosted by the office bearers of the Wushu Association of India (WAI), including Suhel Ahmed (CEO). WAI office bearers, including President Vijay Saraf, Vice President Ranjeet Kalra, General Secretary Bhavneet, and Treasurer Shoot Sharma, extended warm congratulations to Rajat for his groundbreaking achievement and wished him continued success.
Dronacharya Awardee Kuldeep Handoo also lauded the Indian Wushu team for their commendable performance, with special praise for Rajat Charak. He emphasised the untapped potential in Jammu & Kashmir for Wushu and urged the government to give focused attention to the sport in light of upcoming major international events, including the Asian Games.
