Baramulla, Jul 5: Hundreds of mourners from Delina and its neighbouring villages Saturday participated in the Muharram procession, the 9th day of the month of Muharram-Ul-Haram at Delina area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
The procession was one of the series of processions being held in the month of Muharram, the first month of Islamic calendar.
Dressed in black and carrying flags bearing religious inscriptions, participants from the villages of Hygam, Bulgam, Bohripora, Syedpora, Uri, Boniyar and other villages marched from new Imambargah through the National Highway NH-1 to the main cemetery of Ahl-i-Islam Delina.
The participants were reciting elegies and in traditional mourning rituals known as Noha. The procession culminated at the Imambargah at about 6:00 PM.
The sermons were also delivered recounting the events of Karbala and the principles Imam Hussain (AS) who stood for truth, justice, and resistance against tyranny.
Mohammad Ali, one of the mourner while highlighting the importance of observance of Muharram said Hussain (AS) sacrificed his life to save humanity by withstanding against tyrant and tyranny.
“It is the duty of every conscious human being not to let this message fade in oblivion. This necessitates the observance of Muharram and holding processions so that the message is passed from generation to generation and trains humans to stand against injustice whenever and wherever faced,” he said.
The procession also carried the tone of a peaceful protest, with several speakers drawing parallels between the historical struggle of Karbala and contemporary issues of injustice and oppression.
Banners calling for justice and unity were seen among the crowd, as participants emphasised the ongoing relevance of Imam Hussain’s message in today’s world.
Local organisers praised the peaceful nature of the event and the unity shown by villagers across communities.
“Imam Hussain’s sacrifice is not just for one sect, it is a universal stand against injustice,” an organiser said.
The local administration had made necessary arrangements for security and traffic control, ensuring the event proceeded without incident.
As the first month of the Islamic calendar begins, the procession serves not only as a religious observance but also a reminder of the enduring legacy of Karbala—a story of resistance, sacrifice, and commitment to truth.
