SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday reiterated his government’s commitment to strengthening golf infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir to promote the region as a leading golf destination.
He made the remarks during a prize distribution ceremony held in Srinagar after a golf tournament at the Royal Springs Golf Course. The event saw participation from golfers across India, including former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah.
In his address, Omar Abdullah welcomed the golfers and thanked the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) for organising the tournament and a stakeholder interaction with the tourism sector.
The Chief Minister acknowledged the challenges tourism in the region had faced in recent months, particularly following the Baisaran tragedy. He said the presence of visiting golfers sends a strong message that reinforces ongoing efforts to revive tourism in the Union Territory.
“I understand the concerns people may have. Your visit here helps counter the fears and projects the real picture,” he said. “The stories you share carry more weight than any official narrative.”
Abdullah urged participants to become ambassadors of Jammu and Kashmir and convey that the region, despite facing setbacks, remains welcoming and is working towards a full tourism revival.
On the development of golf infrastructure, he informed that work is underway to upgrade facilities at golf courses in Gulmarg, Srinagar, and Jammu. Referring to a recent tournament held in Gulmarg, he said nine holes had been used after more than a decade, and by September, all 18 holes are expected to be operational.
“We will continue to improve golf infrastructure in the Valley and Jammu to ensure better facilities and playing conditions each season,” he said.
The event was also attended by Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Dheeraj Gupta, FICCI delegates, hoteliers, golfers, and other tourism stakeholders.
