
SRINAGAR: Police in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district have arrested an accused involved in the illegal felling, theft and transportation of forest produce from the Warpora forest area of Sopore, officials said on Monday.
The accused, identified as Manzoor Ahmad Ganaie, son of Mohammad Shabir Ganaie, a resident of Jalalabad, Sopore, was apprehended during a police operation following specific inputs regarding illegal activity in the forest area.
Acting on credible information, a police team from Police Post Warpora reached the spot and found an individual transporting illegally felled willow logs on a horse cart. The timber, along with the cart used for transportation, was seized on the spot.
Police said the operation led to the detection of a case of forest theft involving the illegal extraction and movement of willow timber from the Warpora forest area.
In this connection, FIR No. 136/2026 has been registered at Police Station Sopore under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 26-F of the Forest Act. Further investigation has been initiated.
Police reiterated their commitment to protecting forest resources and maintaining strict action against those involved in illegal felling and environmental offences, stating that a zero-tolerance policy is being followed in such cases.
