SRINAGAR: Union Minister and Udhampur MP Jitendra Singh will formally declare the establishment of a new Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Jammu on June 5, a major development aimed at strengthening weather forecasting, climate monitoring and disaster preparedness across Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh.

The announcement was made during a curtain-raiser programme held at the CSIR–Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM), Jammu, ahead of the formal declaration ceremony.

Officials said the Regional Meteorological Centre will serve as a key hub for advanced meteorological services in the north-western Himalayan region. The facility will integrate weather observations with state-of-the-art X-band Doppler Weather Radar systems and an expanded network of Automatic Weather Stations, significantly improving real-time weather monitoring, forecasting accuracy and early warning capabilities.

The centre is expected to strengthen the region’s ability to monitor and forecast extreme weather events, including heavy rainfall, snowfall, flash floods, cloudbursts, thunderstorms, avalanches, heatwaves and coldwaves.

Officials said the initiative represents a significant enhancement of meteorological infrastructure and will improve the delivery of weather and climate services across the three regions.

“The centre will play a vital role in disaster risk reduction and support sectors such as agriculture, aviation, hydropower, tourism, water resource management and transportation,” an official said. “It will cater to the meteorological requirements of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh.”

The Regional Meteorological Centre is also expected to improve the dissemination of weather advisories and warnings through better coordination with stakeholder agencies, enabling timely responses to weather-related hazards.

The formal declaration ceremony will be held at the Convention Centre, Jammu, on June 5. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Earth Sciences and the Ministry of Science and Technology, will announce the establishment of the centre in the presence of senior government officials and meteorological experts.

Jammu and Kashmir Minister for Science and Technology Satish Sharma, Jammu MP Jugal Kishore Sharma, Director General of Meteorology M. Mohapatra and other senior officials of the India Meteorological Department are expected to attend the event.
