SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has sought the intervention of the Union Civil Aviation Minister over delays in the transportation of baggage belonging to Hajj pilgrims returning to the Union Territory.

In a formal communication addressed to the Union Minister, the Chief Minister highlighted that pilgrims returning after performing the sacred Hajj pilgrimage are currently facing difficulties due to separate transportation of their checked-in baggage.

He noted that owing to ongoing maintenance work and operational constraints at Srinagar Airport, the baggage of returning pilgrims is not being transported on the same flights. Instead, it is being routed separately from Ahmedabad by road, resulting in significant delays in delivery.

The Chief Minister observed that the situation has caused inconvenience to pilgrims, many of whom are elderly, as well as their families. He added that the delay has also affected customary practices associated with Hajj, including the immediate distribution of Zamzam water, dates, and other religious offerings upon return.

Emphasising the religious and sentimental significance of the belongings, the Chief Minister urged that arrangements be made to ensure the safe and concurrent transportation of baggage along with the pilgrims on the same flights.

He requested the Ministry of Civil Aviation to intervene so as to avoid hardship to returning Hajj pilgrims and ensure timely and secure delivery of their luggage.

The Chief Minister expressed hope for an early and favourable resolution of the issue.
