Jammu/ Srinagar, May 17: As BRICS Foreign Ministers meeting went underway in New Delhi , all eyes were fixed on Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, for it was his first visit to India since the Middle East crisis erupted on February 28. It was also being very closed watched as to whom all will he meet during the FM’s meeting and present Iranian point of view vis-a- vis the conflict and the ongoing off-on negotiations with the US amidst all the global tensions.
India, too, was keen to know the Iranian standpoint because of the brother BRICS nation’s interests and how it was dealing with crisis . Of particular interest were its relations with China and Pakistan. Araghchi has visited both the countries during the ongoing crisis triggering global tensions over energy security and disruption in supply chains . India is one of the countries affected most by the conflict.
Indian stand, as articulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister S Jaishankar that it stands for territorial integrity and sovereignty of all nations and freedom of movement of ships in all the straits affected by the war. It has also expressed serious concern and unequivocally condemned attacks on the Gulf States.
According to Iranian Embassy,
Dr. Seyed Abbas @araghchi, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, during his visit to India, in addition to participating in the Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the BRICS member states, held constructive and fruitful bilateral meetings with his counterparts from India, the Russian Federation, Malaysia, South Africa, Egypt, Brazil, and Thailand.
He also held two valuable meetings with His Excellency Prime Minister Narendra Modi and His Excellency Ajit Doval, the National Security Adviser of India, during which they engaged in constructive discussions.
Dr. Araghchi delivered remarks on three occasions during the meetings, where he highlighted the courage and steadfast resistance of the great Iranian nation during the recent imposed war. He also referred to the ineffectiveness of the United Nations Security Council in preventing unilateral and aggressive actions by the United States, emphasizing that Iran seeks a mechanism that genuinely represents all continents and regions of the world. He underscored the need to utilize the capacities of BRICS to reform global governance and restore the credibility of multilateralism.
At the conclusion of his visit, the Iranian Foreign Minister participated in a press conference with Indian and international journalists at the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in New Delhi, where he responded to their questions.”
