
SRINAGAR: A woman was critically injured after being attacked by a black bear in the forest area of Puthwari Nowgam, Lawoosa in the Qalamabad area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Tuesday.
The injured has been identified as Hameeda Begum, 32, wife of Bashir Ahmad Kumar, a resident of Lawoosa.
According to initial reports, she was collecting wild mushrooms in a nearby forest when she was attacked by the bear, sustaining grievous injuries.
She was immediately shifted to Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara for treatment, where her condition is stated to be critical.
The incident highlights recurring human–wildlife encounters in forested areas of north Kashmir, particularly during seasons when locals venture into forests for foraging. (KNT)
