SRINAGAR: In a landmark moment for one of Kashmir’s most remote regions, a student from Mahu Valley has successfully cleared the highly competitive JEE Main, becoming the first individual in the valley’s history to achieve the feat.

Arbaz, adorned with a garland of currency notes, stands with his delighted parents in Mahu Valley, Kashmir, celebrating his achievement as the first from the region to clear JEE Main, marking a landmark academic milestone for the remote valley.

Arbaz, a resident of the mountainous Mahu Valley, has set a precedent in a region where access to structured educational resources has long been limited by geography. The valley, which was connected to the outside world by road less than a decade ago, has historically remained isolated from the academic ecosystems available in urban centres.

With no local coaching infrastructure, limited exposure to national-level competitive exams, and no prior success stories to emulate, Arbaz’s achievement marks a significant breakthrough for the region.

News of his success triggered widespread celebrations across the valley, with residents gathering in large numbers in what locals described as a festive, wedding-like atmosphere. For many families, the idea of premier engineering institutions and national entrance examinations had remained distant until now.

The executive of a Srinagar-based coaching institute visited the valley to congratulate the student and his family, calling the moment deeply significant. He said the achievement reflected the untapped potential that exists in Kashmir’s far-flung areas, often unnoticed due to a lack of opportunity.

Over the years, the institute has trained students for national-level engineering and medical entrance examinations, sending a substantial number to institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology, National Institutes of Technology, and All India Institute of Medical Sciences, as well as government medical colleges.

Arbaz’s success comes amid a broader shift in Kashmir’s educational landscape, where improved connectivity and growing awareness are enabling students from rural and remote areas to participate in national-level competitive examinations.

However, Mahu Valley’s case stands out. With formal road access arriving only in recent years, the region has had limited time to catch up with more connected areas. Educational observers say such first-generation achievements often carry long-term impact, serving as a catalyst for change and inspiring future aspirants within the community.

For Mahu Valley, Arbaz’s accomplishment is not just a personal milestone but a defining moment that signals new possibilities for an entire generation.
