SRINAGAR: The Uri-Baramulla highway was closed for vehicular movement on Sunday following a major landslide at Lagama in Uri, triggered by fresh rainfall.
Officials said that heavy debris and mudslides blocked the road completely, forcing authorities to suspend traffic on the route. “Men and machinery have been pressed into service, but restoration will take time as it is a major landslide,” an official said.
The administration issued a traffic advisory for the public, urging commuters to avoid the affected stretch and follow designated diversions.
According to the advisory, traffic has been diverted via the Bandi-Paranpillan-Dachi route towards Uri. The alternate route will remain in use until the debris is cleared and normal movement on the highway is restored.
Authorities have appealed to the general public to cooperate with the administration and plan their travel accordingly to avoid inconvenience.
Meanwhile, efforts are underway on a war footing to clear the debris and reopen the road at the earliest, the official added. (GNS)
